Highway to Whoville

Smart Car

I drove alongside a Smart car yesterday on my way to work. The car was as big as a good Schwinn. Of course I was looking down from my tall (but compact!) SUV. But, still.

The driver looked vunerable and relatively uncomfortable given the size of his own chasis. But he kept up with my over-the-limit 50 MPH. Eek.

I'm sure the cars are technically safe for highways, but not next to monster trucks, er, standard-sized vehicles.

So, until the average U.S. car gets smaller, let's keep Smart cars on local city and town streets, not the highways. Thank you.

Smart is my dream car. It is not true, that the driver feels uncomfortable or that the car is unsafe. Of course by the stupidly large cars, which I would never let on the roads, it unsafe maybe is. I hate large cars! And I would never by a car which "drinks" more than two gallons per mile, or here it is about 4,7 litters per 100 km fuel (new Smart has consumption only 3,5 l per 100 km (1,5 gallon per mile))

Fair enough, Susan. But I really wasn't down on the Smart cars in general - just about them being on the same highways as the "stupidly large cars" - it seems risky.

And I'm sorry but this particular driver did look uncomfortable to me!

I encourage Smart cars in the cities. :-)
