Spring Break

Great weather, good food, shopping, and beach time. Seven leisurely days with my Floridian peeps. It's good to be home.

Dentist-free lollies

Herbal Lollys

From ABC news a couple of weeks ago... one Dr. John's Herbal Lollipop, two times per day for 10 days, disables tooth decay bacteria for 3-6 months. Brilliant.

Much better than the deadly but not addictive cigarettes of the future

Embrace your impatience

Great quote in last week's EW magazine: "Patience is for the weak." Amen.

Context? Who needs context?

Creepy kids are... creepy.

Driving home tonight after dark I hit a 35 MPH zone with a car cruising along beside me on the right. A 6-7 year old little girl was in the back seat, her body straight forward but with her head turned to stare out the window.

Things looked okay regarding her environment, with parents in the front chatting and another kid next to her, but the pale girl with dark hair had a completely blank expression and a wicked stare.

I hope her parents have checked her hairline for numbers.

Our Danny boy

Imagine your favorite little leprechaun - even if he was almost 5'10" - a part of your entire life, then facing your first St. Patrick's Day without him. Blah.

The Guinness flowed, green was worn, and long-faded brogues suddenly returned. (As always, I skipped the corned beef and cabbage.) But there was no lucky Irishman to treat my mom to a night out, tell stupid Irish jokes or just... be him.

Things to avoid next year: Danny Boy, parades, cry-prone drunks.

Devil's food cake?

I found Charm City via Lefsetz. Browse through, the designs are amazing, no matter how good/bad the cakes actually taste.

Hard to pick a favorite but the Exorcist cake really jumps out, green vomit and all.

Pump and watch.

Spending $40 to gas-up is much easier in Ashburn, VA, since Sunoco installed televisions at each pump.

Private little tellies with a variety of programming - not just advertising.

TV at the gas pump

WTF? I was curious to see if their Web site mentions any of this (it doesn't) but their stated mission is, "to be the best and most convenient place to shop, and work." Now they want us to play there too, apparently.

But how is it convenient to work at a Sunoco station?

The squirrel militia

Army Squirrel - Animal House MagazineThe most rambunctious, hungry, and angry squirrel known to mankind moved into my attic a couple of weeks ago. Not surprisingly, inviting an exterminator into the mix amplified my squirrel’s anger issues.

Truth be known, this is a friendly trapper who works to avoid killing any wildlife. But apparently the company is so friendly my squirrel thumbed her nose at them.

I say “she” because Randy the Exterminator said so. On his return visit this morning, he said “she is so hungry now she won’t be able to resist the treat I offer her today.” Sounds sort of ominous, but it’s just peanut butter. And a spring-loaded box, so Randy the Exterminator could move her out of my house.

Mission accomplished. The squirrel, which was supposed to be gone on Friday – before they patched the hole she’d made to come in – is now gone.

Conan and I will not miss her creepy footsteps on the ceiling. The way he chased her around, running from room to room and staring up at the ceiling was adorable. The hole she was making in the office ceiling? Stressful. And our other visitor, a human, hasn’t slept well for days worrying about squirrel bites and a house full of rabid people and pets.

Sounds like interesting fodder for Pet Cemetery 3 – The Family Plot.

Ficlets is a winner.

Ficlets.com
We never doubted its cool factor, and now Ficlets has won a award at SxSW. Nice. I really need to adjust my "to do" list and get back to authoring stories.

Weekend gremlins

Sometimes the little stuff pisses you off but you're not really sure why you're grumpy. Not so this weekend.

Let's start with the stolen hour. The Uniform Time Act of '66 allows for local exemptions and I'm not changing my clocks.

Coca-Cola reduced the size of the diet coke bottle caps. Grip-be-gone.

We paid over $1K last week to take care of a squirrel problem in the attic. The job was finished Friday. The squirrels returned on Saturday. (But the call to the company? Not yet returned.)

Comcast gave me the wrong code sheet to synch the new HDTV with the cable box, helping me lose another three hours this weekend.

Turning on the main master bathroom lights flips a breaker. Could be related to the squirrels.

I got my first Mac computer on Friday. I dare anyone else to say, "I told you so."

Oh, well, gremlins be damned -- I enjoyed the weekend anyway.
