Network schlock

I don't steadily watch much TV but enjoy trying the new shows every fall. I think they're screwing with me this year.

So far I've watched Gossip Girl, Life, K-Ville and the new Kelsey Grammar mess. GG aimed at first season OC-fun, but didn't get there, and the others fell flat.

Next up are Cane, Chuck, Dirty Sexy Money and Reaper. I have high expectations for the latter two.

The long list of returning tripe doesn't help the season's overall outlook. ER's on life support and while I loved 80's-Spader, who watches Boston Legal? Emmy voters.

Other returning WTFs: CSI: NY, Close to Home, Desperate Housewives (seriously, people), Ghost Whisperer, House,Men in Trees, Rules of Engagement, and 'Til Death.

Shiver.

Rain dancing

I took a few snaps out in Maryland this weekend with a promise to myself to get out and capture the foliage in October with the SLR.

The fields are so dry the grass and cornstalks practically crackled in the breeze.  Maryland farm - Sept. 30

Missing the darkness

Last year at this time we (the office) were obsessed with the M&M dark puzzle. Mars candy, we need a new game. Oh, and btw, I hate your "M&M inside" campaign.

I was running late...

... this morning, so I stopped and took some pictures of my garden. Hell, I was already late so why not? The flowers made me smile.

Snarky blogging

Catching up on my Technorati links and discovered a snarky entry on BloggingTips.com. Cool. But Technorati is doing its usual madness: Some areas of the site show my authority as 16 while another says 13. I'm annoyed that this annoys me.

Son of a beep

This is a great phase. You try talking to your kids, and... Beep!

I drove my mother crazy. Beep! My dad beeped back, which drove me crazy. Beep?

Happy evil guy

I was searching for "evil eyes" to express some tongue-in-cheek angst today via email.
Smile!

I like him.

Fantastic!

Curse bubble! While traveling overseas we needed a semiprivate way to bitch amongst ourselves. We were the ones running around with our visas, sometimes in places which required our own security guards, so good behavior was generally wise.

But we had complaints to voice, at least to each other. I needed a polite way to express surprise or disappointment, like a way to say get the fuck away from me while standing in touchy-feely crowded queues in subtropical temperatures.

Fantastic! spoke volumes. It works at home, too.

Overheard today

Particularly random office bits:
  • We're remote!
  • Your beaver is cute (It was about a SuperBuddy, but sent to my EA via IM? Funny.)
  • The five minute rule - anything put into an email can be retracted, no questions asked, for five minutes

Donut bullying

Snapped this at the grocery store Saturday. I didn't buy any. The sign intimidated me.

Gulp

PerrierMy favorite non-alc drink.
Far more delicious than Pellegrino.

They're owned by the same company, but the Perrier source wins.

I hope the source isn't a city sink crossed with a siphon.
Yay Aquafina!

Cats with goons, passing

Get Fuzzy - Sept. 12, 2007
I still think Conan has more attitude. Ha!

On a far sadder and goonless note, three people on the team at work are dealing with the death of a cat this week. (I thought only celebrity deaths came in threes?) My heart really goes out to each of them. I know how much it hurts. Read the tribute one editor wrote about her cat. My mascara is smeared.

Rainy day memories

This morning's rainy weather was nice, but traffic is a mess in Virginia when the roads are wet. Always annoying.

I was at a stoplight near the office while a moment of silence played out on the radio. My eyes welled a bit and I was feeling silly, but then I saw a woman in a nearby car dabbing away tears. I assumed it was for the same reason.

This afternoon I was talking with someone about 9/11 movies, and I realized I own both United 93 and World Trade Center, and haven’t watched either film. I don’t think I’ve consciously avoided them. They’re not the only DVDs on my shelf I haven’t watched, but I'm going to give them a go.

iPod touch... me babe

iPod TouchI was never tempted to be an early adopter of the iPhone but the iPod touch may be a different story. I was even tempted to preorder but I'll wait and see. The desire to pay monthly broadband access fees is a question mark. Not sure I care that much.

Yeah, right.

Well, at least I quoted Jim Morrison rather than a more obvious headline.

Aliens seek final Potter

UFOs over the UK

At the end of July there were multiple UFO sightings in England. Lots of eyewitnesses and photos.  Seems legit, no? I missed the story when it was fresh thanks to my low-input vacation, but I see there was lots of buzz on Digg and various blogs.

Adding a laugh to the news article is a comment by Reg, who smartly concludes the aliens only came for the last Harry Potter book. Perhaps it was a failed distraction created by another publishing house?

Peter Fonda is ubiquitous

Peter Fonda
I see Peter Fonda everywhere. First I caught him in an old horror movie, Race With the Devil. The creepy ending made the dated movie more than worthwhile.

Since I watched Race, he's randomly popped onto my radar almost daily: On the DVD Wild Hogs, in a late-night jetlagged 60s music infomercial, and through media rounds for 3:10 to Yuma.

Is he as cool as he and his fans think? I doubt it matters.

There will be other houses

So... not moving move forward with a new home buy right now. The flaky real estate market and uphill battle of selling the current house - or opting to rent it out - open up too much uncertainty and risk. We'll start over again in the spring if/when things are looking better.

I'm completely bummed about losing the house. I really fell in love with the place and opting not to push forward wasn't an easy decision - but it feels right in many important ways.

Adios zapatos blancos

Summertime is fading away, and fast. Taking my vacation later than normal had the opposite than intended effect - I really thought it would stretch the summer, but noooo. Extended business travel added to the rush, too.

It's almost time to stop wearing sandals every day which bums me out because they're so comfy. I do look forward to sweater weather, but not the truly cold stuff. Here's to an Indian summer.

Looks like I'm getting back into the blogging groove. So nice to have an established blog to visit from time to time when I'm too busy to blog regularly. Ahhh.

NASA + Wikipedia

Starved. Stomped. Radiated. Poisoned.NASA image

NASA's descriptive comparison of cockroaches to PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - genesis on Earth?), lured me in. But I was surprised when I clicked to read about PAHs and NASA sent me to Wikipedia. Seriously?

Latest updaters on the wiki's entry include a legit chem-geek and anonymous IPs from Colorado and Amsterdam.
